Migraine has become a common word in today’s language. It is thought to be the most common neurological condition in the developed world. Migraine can be characterized as a type of recurring headache of intense pain, usually only on one side of the head. Migraine attacks may be accompanied with double vision, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and over sensitivity to light and sound. Bright flashes before the eyes and ringing in the ears may precede the migraine episodes. This condition affects women approximately three times more than men, and if often hereditary.
A number of factors are thought to trigger migraines. They include stress, alcohol, fatigue, anxiety, physical activity, climatic conditions, hormones, etc. Most people are affected by a combination of migraine triggers, and each patient has his or her own distinct combination.
Migraines can be effectively treated through acupuncture. The treatments promote body circulation, remove blood stasis, and clear away the obstructions in the meridian channels to relieve pain. Acupuncture, often coupled with moxibustion, is able to promote the body’s qi, and therefore reducing the number and intensity of migraine attacks. When the correct acupoints and techniques are used, acupuncture is a natural and effective method to treat migraines.
